This fall, downtown Wrenfield's towers have been going dark at 11 p.m.
It's to protect birds, but not everyone is happy about the change.
Jonah Whitcombe reports.
I'm on the Wrenfield riverfront.
Every September and October, huge numbers of birds fly south over this city.
Many small birds migrate at night, and some find their way by the stars.
But bright city lights pull them in and throw them off course.
Many circle the lights until they drop from exhaustion or hit windows.
Often, they mistake the sky and trees reflected in the glass for the real thing.
For five years, a local bird group has searched downtown at dawn for birds that hit buildings.
Last fall alone, they found about two thousand birds.
This year, the city set lights-out hours from September to mid-November.
Buildings twenty stories or taller are asked to turn off unneeded lights from 11 p.m. to 6 a.m.
That includes outside lights, rooftop signs, and lights in empty offices.
For now, it's only a request, so there's no fine.
Even so, thirty-five of the forty-two tall buildings downtown have signed on.
The results came quickly.
Group leader Odile Varga says they found fewer than half as many birds this September as last September.
But business owners along the river see it differently.
Restaurant owner Dominic Ferrante says many diners come to see the city lights.
He says the dark riverfront feels gloomy, so some customers leave early.
Some people who work late also say the streets feel darker.
Jonah, how is the city responding to these concerns?
It's keeping streetlights on and adding path lights that only shine down.
The goal is to cut light spilling into the sky while keeping the path bright.
Next month, the city council will vote on making the lights-out hours mandatory next year.
Reporting from Wrenfield, I'm Jonah Whitcombe for ETY News.
Jonah Whitcombe
