This morning, my son and I hung the Korean flag on our balcony.
He unfolded the flag, and I slid the pole into the holder on our railing.
It is August 15, Liberation Day.
Once the flag was up, I turned to look at my son beside me.
He is taller than me now, so I have to look up at him.
He turned seventeen this year.
Yu Gwan-sun was only seventeen when she died in prison.
My son's biggest worry right now is next week's math test.
He sleeps in, makes instant noodles, and jokes around with his friends.
A girl his age was dragged away for calling for independence, and never came home.
The same age, but the times they were born into changed everything.
What would I have done if I had lived back then?
Could I have thrown myself into that fight, knowing what it would cost?
At first the answer came easily, "Of course I would have."
But that answer soon made me ashamed.
Even sharing a different opinion at work is not easy.
I can spend a whole day deciding whether to say one short sentence.
Back then, one name on a list could put a whole family in danger.
I am not sure what I would have chosen with that much at stake.
Maybe I would have lowered my head and looked away.
They must have been afraid too.
They were afraid, and they went anyway.
The difference between them and me was not fear, but what came after it.
In those years, families were pressured to change their names to Japanese ones.
This morning I called my son by his own name.
Someone gave their life for a morning like this one.
Nothing about this ordinary morning was ever guaranteed.
I still do not know if I could have been brave.
But every year I want to ask myself this question again.
What I can do now is remember their sacrifice and make each day count.
